A friend of mine responded to my recent blog, The Choices We Make (https://www.watersoverstone.com/the-choices-we-make/) where I opened up a conversation about the fulfillment anyone can experience when they align who they are and what they care most about with the decisions they make and actions they take.
“You just can’t change your mind like that and have it all come out right. Life is complicated. Everything we do is tied in time to everything else we do.”
She’s right of course. Changing your mind is NOT the same as changing your life. Although, changing the way you think about yourself, and your life is a necessary starting point to living life in a new and more fulfilling way.
It’s a bit cliché, although true, that changing direction in life is not easy. It can be very scary to plunge into the unknown simply because you think you will enjoy life more. The change I encourage and support as a Coach isn’t merely a matter of doing whatever you like, and certainly not doing simply as you are told. It is a matter of identifying that pursuit which you are truly passionate about and committing to do it. As Dolly Parton has said – “Find out who you are and do that, on purpose.”.
When we feel off track, untethered, or adrift in our lives, for reasons which we may not be able to identify little less articulate, what choice do we have?
Life is complicated. An engaged and fulfilling life takes awareness, intention, commitment, and courage. Joseph Campbell calls this “following our bliss (perfect happiness / great joy)”.
“If you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in the field of your bliss, and they open the doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be. If you follow your bliss, doors will open for you that wouldn’t have opened for anyone else.”
If you are feeling stuck, or adrift in your life and want to talk about how working with a Coach can be a catalyst for and in a support be creating a new way of being, please, give me a call.
