So often, when making life decisions we focus only on what we are going to do to move forward.
We know that when there is something not to our liking, we want to change the situation. Or perhaps, there is something material we want. Or need. We think, “I’m tired of this!”, or “I deserve it!” And well, we go and do whatever it is, or we go out and buy the thing.
But how often do we take the time to really think through our decisions before we take action? When emotions guide our decisions, we can act reactively, spontaneously, and even rashly, and as a result, we can realize undesired and negative impacts on our lives. Our actions can betray us. We can end up less satisfied or safe in the long run even as the immediate result of our actions made us feel better.
Let me offer a suggestion to one way we can avoid unwanted consequences.
- First, define your objective – what outcome do you desire?
- Next, – and this is the step most people skip, and which, once considered, has the greatest potential to have a positive impact on how you move forward – get clear on why you want this outcome – what is your reason for seeking the results you’ve chosen – and what the benefits will be?
- Now you are ready to decide on how you’ll move foraward.. Once you have honestly considered your reasons for doing something and are clear on the benefits you expect, the last step typically yields a better outcome, one you have chosen with good reasons and intention.
Give it a try. Let me know how it goes.
